Rich's Paving lays asphalt paving in Sonoma, CA and across the Sonoma Valley. We work out of Petaluma, a short drive east over Stage Gulch Road. Rich's Paving is a third generation family paving company, and the family works the crew today. The family has paved Sonoma County since 1988. Every job in Sonoma gets our own paving equipment and crew. Sonoma is a small city of about 11,000 people, and the valley around it stays rural. Driveways here often run long, past vines or open pasture, before they reach the house. That length changes how we plan the base and the drainage.
The ground under Sonoma is a big part of the job. The valley floor runs to clay loam, and Huichica clay loam covers much of the south valley near Carneros. Clay swells when it soaks up winter rain and shrinks again through the dry summer. Asphalt laid on a thin base over that soil cracks and dips within a few years. Sonoma averages about 29 inches of rain a year, and almost all of it falls in winter. So we dig the base deeper where the soil calls for it and grade to shed water. Then we compact the rock in lifts before any asphalt goes down.

Homes off Arnold Drive and Highway 12 often sit well back from the road. A long approach road carries more water and more weight than a short city driveway. Near the Plaza it is the opposite, with older streets and short, tight driveways. Both need the same thing underneath, which is a base that holds up in wet clay.
Our asphalt driveway paving starts with grade and drainage, because water is what breaks a driveway apart. On a hillside lot we may add a swale or a catch basin to move runoff away from the pavement. Some owners want asphalt on the long run and concrete driveways closer to the house. We do both, and you can request an estimate for either one.
Sonoma Valley is wine country, and the visitors arrive by the vanload. A tasting room lot takes tour vans and delivery trucks all week long. Crush season adds loaded equipment and heavier truck traffic on top of that. Pavement built for cars alone breaks down at the entry and along the truck path.
Our commercial paving covers parking lots, striping and ADA stalls for wineries and shops near the Plaza. Downtown Sonoma sits in a National Historic Landmark district, so access and staging take planning. We can phase a lot in halves so the business stays open while we work. Once the surface is sound, asphalt sealcoating slows the drying and fading that hot Sonoma summers cause.
