A plain concrete patio comes with a broom finish in standard gray, and it stands up to sun and rain. Stamped concrete takes that same poured slab and adds a pattern and a color that you choose up front. The finished patio can look like cut stone or brick, but it is still one solid slab of concrete. Stamped concrete is a poured concrete slab with a pattern pressed into the surface while it is still wet. We color the concrete first, then press stamping mats across the slab to form the texture and joint lines. Patterns copy slate, ashlar stone, wood plank or brick, and we have stamped slate patios here in Sonoma County. You pick the pattern and the color before we set forms, so you know what the patio will look like.
Color comes two ways: mixed all the way through the concrete, or worked into the top of the slab. A second accent color in the joint lines gives the surface more depth, the way real stone varies in tone. Because the patio is one pour, there are no seams between stones for weeds to push up through it. We finish the slab with a sealer that brings out the color and helps the surface shed water and dirt.
The base under a concrete patio matters as much as it does under a new concrete driveway. Much of the North Bay sits on heavy adobe clay that swells with winter rain and shrinks in dry summers. That movement cracks a slab poured straight on dirt, so we strip the soft soil and build a compacted base. We set the forms to a slope so that rain runs off the patio and away from your house.
Concrete moves as it cures, so we cut control joints that steer any cracking into straight lines you barely notice. On a sloped lot, a low retaining wall can hold the grade and leave you a level patio area. We handle the grading and the drainage on the same job, since both change how long the slab lasts. Stamping happens the day of the pour, while the concrete is still soft enough to take the pattern well.
Summers here run long and dry, so a backyard patio in Sonoma County gets used from spring into late fall. Most families want a solid spot for a table and chairs and a grill that does not sit on dirt. A concrete patio holds up heavy furniture or a hot tub that would sink into soft ground. Winter rain runs off a sloped slab, and the surface dries fast once the sun comes back out.
Hot, dry summers fade color over time, so we seal stamped concrete and you reseal it every few years. Day to day, care is a broom and a hose, plus a rinse when the oak leaves come down.
