Driveway Paving
New asphalt driveways, replacements and resurfacing for homes across Sonoma County. We handle the grading, the base and the paving with our own equipment and crew.
Rich's Paving does asphalt paving in Sebastopol and across the rural west side of Sonoma County. We work out of Petaluma, about 20 minutes south of town on Highway 116. Rich's Paving is a third generation family paving company, and the family works the crew today. We have paved in this county since 1988, and we run our own paving equipment and crew. Sebastopol counts about 7,500 people in town, plus a wide stretch of farm country and small ranches around it. Most of the driveways we pave here sit well outside the city limits, out on rural property.
Homes out here sit back from Gravenstein Highway, Green Valley Road and the lanes near Graton and Freestone. A driveway can run a few hundred feet through old apple orchard land before it reaches the house. Those drives carry work trucks and farm equipment as well as cars, and plenty still run on gravel. West county sits closer to the coast, so it picks up more rain and more morning fog than towns inland. Ground that stays damp into late spring will find any weak spot in a thin road base. That is why we look at drainage before we talk about asphalt driveway paving.

A long driveway is really a road. It carries weight in all weather, so we build it like one. We grade the route, set a rock base, then pave with hot mix asphalt. On soft or low ground we add depth to the base rather than more asphalt on top. Roads shared by several parcels get the same build under our shared road and farm road paving.
Many properties around Sebastopol keep part of the drive in gravel. We build and rebuild gravel driveways with the right rock and a crown that sheds water. Some owners pave the first stretch by the road plus the parking area, and leave the back run in gravel. That keeps mud off the house without paving the whole length.
Sebastopol sits about 8 miles west of Santa Rosa, on the edge of the Laguna de Santa Rosa. That low ground floods in winter, and water with nowhere to go softens the base under a driveway. We handle grading and drainage as part of the paving, with slope and catch basins where a site needs them. Fog and shade also keep pavement damp longer under oaks and orchard rows.
Older asphalt in west county tends to fail at the edges first, where water gets in. Cracks widen, then the edge crumbles under a truck tire. Asphalt repair and patching can hold a good drive for years when the base is still sound. Once the surface dries out and fades, asphalt sealcoating slows the next round of cracking. A drive that has worn thin across its whole length can take a new asphalt overlay instead of a tear-out.
